THE CITY council yesterday approved in a special session P10-million in financial aid for the victims of typhoon Ondoy in Metro Manila and the National Capital Region.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte requested for the emergency session, citing the urgency of the situation with many victims are still suffering from the shortage of food and water a few days after the storm dumped 16 inches of water in six hours of rainfall.
“I am appealing that we give a certain amount and with the consensus of this body, the amount of P10 million will be available for help,” Duterte said during the deliberation that was attended by 18 councilors.
THE DEATH toll from devastating floods in the capital and surrounding areas has climbed to 100, with 32 people still missing, the government said Monday.

In its latest update, the National Disaster Coordination Council said the number of people displaced in last Saturday’s deluge had risen to more than 451,000.The government had said earlier yesterday that the death toll was 86.
Duterte told the Commission on Audit and the City Budget Officer that he needs cash and not checks or money transfer documents to be sent to Manila. Duterte requested former councilor Emmanuel Galicia to inform the PNRC ahead about the city’s assistance.

Sr. Supt. Ramon Apolinario, director of the Davao City Police Office, was told to deliver personally the financial assistance to the PNRC.The P10 million assistance would be taken from the city’s calamity fund and would be given to the victims through the PNRC specifically for the provision of food and water.

Meantime, Chief Supt. Pedro Tango, director of the Davao Regional Police Office, ordered his directors and personnel to donate relief goods for the calamity victims. He said the items will be shipped to the Police National Headquarters for distribution as soon as they are available. (With reports from AFP)
